Murray 1200 Day 3

Cockpit setup for

kilometres of straight roads heading into Dingee.

Bike light at end of handlebars

Train pulls into Dingee. Its pronounced Dinghy as in the boat, not dinjy as in gloomy and drab.

Prairee where I rested for a while. Just a crossroads in the Mallee but a solar farm is due to be located nearby

Traffic in Prairie

Mitiamo.

Mitiamo Servo is in the back garden of the store.

Durrham Ox. I think this is a fire shelter. Anyway, it was breezy and cool and I had a quick snooze there before ploughing on to Boort. Its about 20m from the highway and you get trucks using their engine brakes right next to you. This sounds like when the howling banshee from the east met the crazy witch from the west and they had a BIG jam session on untuned instruments.

Day 3

Day 3 of the Murray 1200 was "only" 261 km, but having got in at 4:20am left last at about 8am.  This is like getting up at 2pm in the real world, a bit late to get stuff done.....  Anyway I was behind everybody all day and slightly tired but there was a good tailwind at the start. I had made Boort by 4pm with only 140 to go. You just have to suck it up and get on with it.  At Wycheproof I had some dinner at the pub, then ploughed on through Birchip to Warracknabeal. Had one front puncture along the way but being on a quiet road had no problems fixing it.

Front lights were very low battery by Warracknabeal, but I actually didn't mind this sort of technical problem. It took the mind off the very slow count-down of kilometres that would otherwise occur. So I just got on with riding but was never happier than when I hit the right turn sign with Warracknabeal only 2k away. 2:20 am at the checkpoint this time!  I was well fed by Simon and then toddled off to bed, doing the right thing by plugging in all the rechargeable do-dahs. Next post follows here .

A stop near Corowa. Tiff and Pete had the spot trackers on us and knew we were stopped, and caught up to check we were ok.  Yep!

Late night Kyabram
Hi

Day 2 of the ride started about 6:30 am, and I left with Tim, Jan-Erik from Sweden and Richard Ferris for Urano.  There had been 3 drop out the day before, as well as Tiffany's injury, Wolfgang got at far as Conargo before overnighting there and quitting, and Peter Donnan gave up in the face of difficult headwinds and overwhelming distances.

It turns out Richard had driven himself to exhaustion the day before.  He fell over by the side of the road on his bike, decided he needed a sleep so just stayed there for a while sleeping. Later he had a puncture and slept a bit before fixing that. He was pretty cactus when he arrived in!

Mad it into Urano fine with Richard. There was a breakfast place open we didn't know about, so made do with our own food.  We travelled well out of Urana but it was a long stretch to Corowa and I was running very low on energy when we got there.

We stopped at Mcdonalds, and Richard was ready to go on before me, so he did. I ate and drank a bit more, then was on my way, feeling better and navigating by gps no problems. But 200k to go with a 3pm start!

On the road out of Yarrawonga, I passed dome Deli in his red Glyde velomobile and was amazed to see him there.  He was the fastest, and I was the slowest, what was happening? It turns out some not-great tyres, and some not-great tubes had been fitted to the velomobile.  These were the rare 349 size.

I was well equipped with spares and was able to give dome a patch kit and a tube to keep him going. 60 metres up the road, a whole farming family was peering down the road at Dome, wondering "What was this strange vehicle and why is it stuck somewhere near our property?" and I was able to fill them in:
"A stuck velomobile, sort of an aerodynamic bike. I was able to help him because I had the right sized spare tubes. Yes, I have another strange vehicle. We are both on the same silly, long bike ride."

Got into Katatamatite around 7pm in time for the shop, where a nice Indian couple were shutting up shop and they described the various bikes that had gone through incuding the Red one, and were curious about mine.

I didn't feel safe on the roads near there. Going south, the sun was setting and there wasn't a good shoulder on the road.  Then heading west, the road was busy with trucks and cars and there was no consistant shoulder.  I got a front puncture in the dark when I ran over a large obstacle but was able to fix it. The narrow shoulder and traffic meant it was hard to fix the tyre, although I did have one or 2 passing cars offer assistance.

It was a relief to hit Shepparton McDonalds about 10:30, have a bit to eat, check in with Mission Control (Simon Watt) by text before heading out into the kilometres of nothing West of Shepparton. At a servo that was open, I bought batteries for back lights and put air in my front tyre. Out of Shepparton I was on lights alone, and experienced a sort of horizon shift while riding on roads at night. This is a not knowing whether you are going downhill, uphill, or what.  As well, I was on unknown roads with little visible, and your mind fills in the blanks and pretends you are on roads you do know by day and night. For me, this is the Great Ocean Road near Lorne.

It was a plod on to Rochester, and after a rear puncture got there quite late, 4:20 am. I roused Simon, he listened to my anecdotes of the road, fed me and shuffled me off to bed.  I fully expected to see other leaving cyclists but didn't.  Very soon it was bed.  Next post follows here .

Day 1, Murray 1200

After an uneventful drive up to Robinvale I settled in fairly well into the cabin we had booked and was able to greet a few organisers and riders. After a big dinner from Pizza Pi (1300 314159) we were off to bed 9ish for an early departure,

Up, ready, fed and on bikes by 5am, we managed to settle into a bunch that lasted all the way to Balranald, about 80k away.  I dropped off the back to have a pee and couldn't get back on the bunch but was still within sight of them at Balranald.  I didn't stop in Balranald but had a break by the side of the road a few k on. Possibly not wise!

Anyway the turn 3k out of Balranald was into a strong, unavoidable headwind, someething that lasted all the way to Deniliquin about 190k ahead.  For some of the early part of that riding I was with a supporting bunch, but they were ahead of me until Moulamein and stayed ahead after that.

Lunch break was Moulamein. At this point you have to strap yourself in and be committed to 90k of headwinds.  It was hard work, but Alex from Sydney came up from behind (he was last on the course) suggesting we share the work of riding which we did most of the way to the destination at Jerilderie.  This was worth it! Every stretch varied a bit but the wind was dust-whipping strong at times.

We had a very welcome stop way out in the bush with Pete and Tiffany (who had dropped out due to injury) supplying us with drinks and food. My chain had been creakingly dry, and Pete lubed it, Alex had run over road kill and damaged a disc brake, but soon all that was fixed and we were on our way.

A few k's further on we picked up Simon into our bunch and we rolled on together.  By Deniliquin, I was pretty tired, and Alex was slowing down due to lack of energy.  I stopped at a big roundabout while Simon went ahead looking for food. Alex caught up soon and guided him to Mcdonalds where we stopped for a break and meal.

Everybody's fitness was much improved after that.  We had a blessed tailwind into Conargo, then turned right for Jerilderie. My light batteries were running low at this stage, and I stuck with Simon all the way, getting into Jerilderie at 2am.  Off to bed!Next day follows here .

Spot Tracker Link for Murray 1200

Hi, Simon Watt has just emailed through the spot tracker link for the  Murray 1200km  ride I am embarking on Saturday. Here is the link, https://spotwalla.com/locationViewer.php?id=763 .  The screen dump pic above shows Pete "the legend" Heal powering west at 29kph, at 9:40 pm or so.

From Saturday at 5am local time I should get a similar, slower dot on the same map for 4 days. Not quite the Indian Pacific Wheel Race, but not a trip round the block either!

Unique Bike Repair

Printing on the Predator 3d delta printer.

Screenshot of Cura, a software for sending stl files to 3d printers

Old (orange / grey) and new (white) spacers for trike during installation. The bolts with round heads are this sort of thing which came from a table on hard rubbish,

The whole back trike half

All together, and squeaks a bit less.  The parts have been in the frame since 2018 when I blogged about them.
Hi

For the weeks, I have been riding my trike a lot in hills as training, including a 200k Audax ride. The bottom bracket area has been squeaking and also waggling, and I diagnosed worn plastic spacers in the frame.  No problem, I printed some more and put them in the bike today.  I plan to put the whole trike design on thingiverse in stages, and will start have started with the set of 4 printed spacers.

So now no waggling, but still a bit creaky, I will tighten things up a bit and see if I can get a better result. Next post follows here .

Update, March 4, 2020

I did a bit more work on the trike this morning, and managed to remove a bit of creaking. I tightened the bottom bracket shell and put rubber washers under the bolts holding the frame together. And its a bit better! Regards
